The 1989 Chinese Panda 1 oz Gold Coins offered here come in sealed protective plastic. During 1989, the Chinese Mint produced two varieties of these 1 oz coins. The Large Date version, struck at the Shenyang Mint, is more difficult to find compared to the Small Date version, which was minted in Shanghai.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1989 Chinese Panda Gold Coins displays the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, a building within the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. This design has been a staple of the Gold Panda Series since its introduction, reflecting the importance of Chinas cultural heritage. Inscriptions include the nation of issue and 1989.
Reverse
On the reverse of 1989 Chinese Panda 1 oz Gold Coins, youll find the playful Giant Panda, seated with a bamboo branch in its paw. The Giant Panda is the star of this coin series, and the 1989 edition captures the gentle nature of this beloved animal. Throughout the history of the series, only one year, 2002, repeated a previous panda design. Inscriptions include the face value and .999 1 OZ AU.
History
These coins are called “Large Date” due to the distinct numerals on the reverse side. The year “1989” is written in slightly larger, thicker numerals compared to the Small Date coins, which feature slimmer numerals. This subtle difference makes the Large Date coins particularly interesting for collectors.
