{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}Since its introduction in 1987, the Gold Britannia series from the Royal Mint has remained one of Britains most recognized bullion coin programs. The series represents a modern expression of traditional British coin design. Although todays Britannias are struck in .9999 pure gold, earlier issues such as the 1989 coin were minted in 22-karat gold. Provident Metals currently offers the 1989 British Britannia 1 oz Gold Coin.
Highlights:
Your 1989 British Britannia 1 oz Gold Coin arrives in a plastic flip for individual protection. During this period, Britannias were produced in 22-karat gold, consisting of 91.67% gold blended with copper. The 1989 issue is significant because it is the final year copper was used in the alloy. From 1990 to 2012, the Royal Mint shifted to silver as the remaining metal in the composition.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1989 British Britannia Gold Coin displays the third portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Raphael Maklouf. This likeness was featured on British coinage from 1985 through 1997 and presents the Queen wearing the Royal Diadem. Surrounding inscriptions identify the denomination and year of issue. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, DEI GRATIA REGINA FD, and 100 POUNDS.
Reverse
On the reverse side of 1989 Britannia 1 oz Gold Coins, Philip Nathans image of Britannia stands prominently. She is shown holding a trident and shield, reflecting Britains long-standing maritime history. Fine detailing throughout the design demonstrates the Royal Mints craftsmanship and attention to precision. Inscriptions read ONE OUNCE, FINE GOLD, BRITANNIA, and 1989.
History
As official UK legal tender, Gold Britannias carry a face value supported by the British government. UK investors may also benefit from tax considerations such as exemption from Capital Gains Tax. Internationally, the Britannia series is valued for its dependable gold content and consistent design, making it a familiar option among government bullion coins.
