These coins each contain 91.67% gold by weight. This means that each coin has exactly 1/2 Troy ounce of pure 22-karat gold. Silver and copper are added to the gold to give them additional strength and durability.

Obverse

Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse as she strides away from the United States Capitol building. In the image, the sun is hitting her back, and she is carrying both an olive branch and a large flaming torch. This design was originally featured on Gold Double Eagle Coins, which were released in 1907, and it was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

Reverse

Sculptor Miley Busiek created a bald eagle family design specifically for use on American Eagle Gold Coins. The design shows a large male bald eagle as he returns to the family next with an olive branch in his talons. His female mate and hatchling are waiting for him in the nest.

History

The American Eagle Coin program from the United States Mint began in 1986. At launch, there were only a few options for purchase. But today, there are different weights, finishes, and even metal types to consider. The gold coins come in 1, 1/2, 1/4, and 1/10 oz weights. There are three finish options: bullion, uncirculated, and proof. Finally, there are now four different metal types: gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. Each different metal version of these coins will have a different design on both the obverse and reverse face.
