{{/presale}}It is not atypical for proof collectible silver coins to see a sharp decline in mintage figures following the debut release. After all, it is the very first release that is often the most coveted by collectors, though subsequent anniversary releases or special finishes also tend to attract the eye of collectors. The 1988 Proof American Eagle Silver Coin is a perfect example of the depressed demand that occurs after an initial release. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase 1988-S Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins online from Provident Metals in perfect condition.
Highlights:
When the Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin was introduced by the United States Mint in 1986, it was met with incredible demand. The first issue of the coin sold more than 1.446 million specimens, the highest recorded mintage to date in the collection. One year later, in 1987, the mintage fell by 500,000 coins to 904,000. By the third year when the 1988-S Proof American Eagle Silver Coin was released, interest had slipped by nearly 1 million coins to a total of just 557,370 specimens.
Obverse
On the obverse of 1988-S Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver coins is Walking Liberty. This iconic design captures Liberty in left-profile relief walking from right to left across the coins design field. She has her right hand outstretched toward the sun on the horizon as her left hand carries the branches of oak and laurel. Over her shoulders, the American flag flaps in the breeze.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1988 Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin comes with the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design is as old as the country itself, having been designed for the first coins ever struck by the United States Mint. It has been modified countless times over the course of 225-plus years. This particular version was modified in 1986 by John Mercanti.
History
Proof American Eagle Silver Coins have never matched the mintage figure of the 1986 release. However, certain releases have seen intense demand that has pushed mintage to or above 1 million coins, though the latter has only happened one other time, in 2006.
Ordering
