Obverse

The obverse of this 1988 Proof Chinese Panda Gold Coin displays the majestic Hall of Prayers within the Temple of Heaven. This iconic design has graced the obverse of the series since its inception, symbolizing China’s rich cultural heritage. Inscriptions read 1988.

Reverse

On the reverse, the 1988 Proof Chinese Panda 12 oz Coin presents a charming tableau of two pandas at play in a tree. One panda clings playfully to the trunk, while its companion hangs from a branch. The background reveals another tree and a tranquil body of water, capturing the natural beauty of the pandas’ habitat. Inscriptions include 1000, .999, and 12 OZ AU.

History

The Chinese Panda Gold Series, which made its debut in 1982, has been a consistent annual release ever since. While most coins in the series are issued as BU strikes, larger denominations like this impressive 12 oz coin were specially minted as proof strikes. It’s worth noting that while these coins were initially produced in Troy ounces, the series transitioned to the metric system in 2016, with new releases now measured in grams.
