History
Introduced in 1986, the American Gold Eagle coin series was originally produced by the United States Mint in a 1 oz weight denomination. It wasnt until 1987, however, that the coin was issued in a 1/2 oz denomination by the Philadelphia Mint. This 1988 coin features a P mint mark to show that it was struck by the Philadelphia Mint. This mint location released the 1/2 oz denomination of the American Gold Eagle until 1993, when the issuance of this coin was transitioned to the West Point Mint.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1988-P Proof American Eagle Gold Coin is the image of Lady Liberty, which was originally designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This design has been featured on many coins released from the United States Mint over the years. This specific image shows Lady Liberty walking toward the viewer with rays of sunshine extending out behind her. In her hands, she carries an olive branch and a torch.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1988-P Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin shows a unique design created by Miley Busiek, featuring a family of eagles. In the image, a male eagle flies overhead, carrying an olive branch in its talons. It flies towards the nest, where a female eagle and her eaglets wait. This side of the coin also shows its value, purity, weight, and country of origin.
