{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The Perth Mint began the Platinum Koala Series in 1988 as part of its growing bullion coin offerings. As the first release, the series focused on showcasing Australian wildlife with new designs each yeara feature that would later influence popular programs like the Silver Kookaburra and Silver Koala. Now, 1988 Australian Koala 1 oz Platinum Coins are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These 1988 Australian Koala 1 oz Platinum Coins mark the start of the series, each arriving in a protective capsule. The 1988 release stands among the highest mintages in the collection, with additional options available that year in 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz platinum.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1988 Australian Koala Platinum Coin carries the 1985 portrait of Queen Elizabeth II created by Raphael Maklouf. This third-generation likeness presents the Queen in right-profile relief wearing the George IV State Diadem, a design found on many Commonwealth coins of that time. The inscriptions here read ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 100 DOLLARS.
Reverse
The reverse side of 1988 Koala 1 oz Platinum Coins features the first design in the series, showing a koala sitting in a relaxed position. The straightforward artwork keeps the focus on the animal itself with minimal surrounding elements. Throughout Australia, Aboriginal groups have long shared stories about koalas that highlight themes of wisdom and care for the environment. Some traditions speak to the koalas limited need for water and long periods of rest, giving the animal an important role in teachings about balance and conservation. Inscriptions here read THE AUSTRALIAN KOALA, 1 OZ 9995 PLATINUM, and 1988.
History
Today, the koala remains one of Australias best-known wildlife symbols. It often appears in tourism campaigns and conservation projects, reflecting ongoing efforts to protect native species and their habitats.
