Obverse
The obverse side of the 1988 Proof Canadian Bowhead Whale Gold Coins features a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. In this design from Arnold Machin, Her Majesty is shown in right-profile relief with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara on her head. This effigy is just the second used on Canadian coins during her reign and was in place from 1965 to 1989. The inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, D.G. REGINA, and CANADA.
Reverse
On the reverse field of 1988 $100 Proof Bowhead Whale Gold Coins is an image of a bowhead female with its young calf. Newborn bowhead whale calves typically weigh 13-15 feet in length at birth with a weight of around 2,200 pounds. Within 30 minutes of being born, the bowhead whale calf can swim on its own. Inscriptions on this face of the coin read CANADA, 1988, and 100 DOLLARS.
History
The bowhead whale is the only member of the baleen whale species endemic to the Arctic and subarctic waters of the world. The whale is named for the triangular shape of its head that is used to break through ice in the Arctic. Bowhead whales have the largest mouth of any animal in the world, with a length that runs 13 feet of its body, accounting for nearly one-third the total length of the whales.
