{{/presale}}There were 3,792,233 of the 1987 Proof Sets sold by the US Mint. This was the third highest sales of any Proof Set in the 1980s. Due to the Treasurys oversupply of Kennedy Half Dollars, the US Mint did not make half dollars available for circulation. Thus, the only way for collectors and others to get their hands on them was by purchasing either a Proof Set or a Mint Set. The 1987 Proof Set remained a 5 coin set with a face value of $0.91. Deep cameo finishes will be found on nearly all coins in the Set, a result of the minting technology improvements being made. This Set was made by the US Mint in San Francisco. Currently, Provident Metals is offering the 1987 US Mint Proof Set for purchase online.
Highlights:
The 1987 Proof Set is packaged in a holder designed for the 5 coins. Each coin is set into its own slot on the textured purple cardboard holder, and then sealed in a plastic case. This case is placed into a purple outer box, which has a flap to be used to slide the case in and out. This packaging design has been in use the past 5 years.
Designs
Each Proof Set includes one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar. Each of these coins features a profile of the respective President on the obverse. They each feature their own unique reverse design.
Through the years, each of the coins has experienced having their designs modified. Sometimes in a fairly major fashion, sometimes just minor tweaks. In 1987, the Jefferson Nickel had some minor tweaks done – Jeffersons hair was sharpened as were some of the details of his mansion, the Monticello. Beginning in 1987, it was fairly common to find some well-struck nickels with six full steps on the reverse.
History
By 1987, the Treasury had built up a two-year supply of Kennedy Half Dollars. A significant reason for this increase in supply was the drop-off in demand for half dollars. As a result, no Kennedy Half Dollars were struck for circulation in 1987. This is what led to the half dollars being available only in the Proof Sets and Mint Sets.
