In its early years, the series used Troy ounce-based weights and face values that were later revised after 2001. The debut release featured 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins, with the 1/20 oz option added in 1983. Each 1987-S Chinese Panda 1/4 oz Gold Coin is offered in a sealed plastic pouch to maintain its condition. This edition is the only one in the series to feature the S mint mark, indicating production at the Shanghai Mint.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1987-S Chinese Panda Gold Coin features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This well-known building, part of the Temple of Heaven complex in Beijing, has appeared on every Gold Panda coin since the series was launched in 1982.
Reverse
On the reverse side, this 1987-S Panda 1/4 oz Gold Coin highlights the panda in a peaceful scene. It shows the animal bending over to drink from a pond, with small ripples spreading out on the water’s surface. Bamboo can be seen nearby, a nod to the pandas natural surroundings.
History
Giant pandas live in remote, fragmented habitats that play a role in their endangered classification. Their specific dietary needs contribute to this isolation. A panda needs large forested spacesup to 10 square kilometersto find enough bamboo. On a daily basis, pandas can eat up to 38 kilograms of bamboo to support their nutritional needs.

For those orders of $999.99 or less, there is no need to sign for your package. However, you may select the option to require a signature at delivery if you want. This can be chosen and paid for at checkout. All orders of $1000 or more require a signature to complete delivery.
