Highlights:
Every 1987-S Chinese Panda 1/10 oz Gold Coin is housed in a protective flip. These fractional gold coins were struck at the Shanghai Mint, confirmed by the S mint mark on the reverse. That year, the Chinese Mint produced coins at both Shanghai and Shenyang, marking the only dual-facility release in the history of the series.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1987-S Chinese Panda Gold Coin features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, an iconic building within the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. This design has been a consistent part of the series since its beginning in 1982.
Reverse
On the reverse of 1987-S Panda 1/10 oz Gold Coins, youll find the years distinctive design of a panda bending to sip from a pond. This image was used only for the 1987 release, making it unique to the date. Pandas are admired worldwide for their round faces and relaxed movements, while their jaw strength and molars are suited for eating bamboo stalks.
History
The Giant Panda is easy to identify by its bold black-and-white fur. Black patches around the eyes, ears, and limbs stand out against its white face and torso. They are heavy-bodied animals with thick coats adapted to life in mountainous terrain. Mature pandas often range between 220 and 330 pounds and may grow as long as six feet.
