Obverse
The obverse of the 1987 American Eagle Silver Coin showcases the iconic Walking Liberty effigy, originally designed by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916. Liberty gracefully walks towards the sun on the horizon, draped in the American flag, while carrying branches of oak and laurel, symbolizing strength and victory. The inscriptions include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 1987.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1987 Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin, you’ll find John Mercantis splendid depiction of the heraldic eagle, specially crafted for this series in 1986. This modern rendition pays homage to a design dating back to the 1790s, created by Robert Scot, the 1st Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. The front-facing bald eagle holds the US national shield, grasping the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace, while a triangular cluster of 13 stars gleams above its head. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
The 1987 release of the American Eagle holds a special place in its history. While not the inaugural coin of the series, it proudly boasts the original record mintage level. The year 1987 witnessed remarkable sales, with 11.442 million coins sold, more than double the sales of its debut year in 1986.
