Introduced in 1986, it currently features four weights in its Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof collections, with a single weight available in the Burnished collection. In 1986, the coin series debuted with four weights in the BU series and just one weight in the Proof series. Obverse
The obverse side of 1986-W Proof American Eagle Gold Coins features the historic image of Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This 1907 depiction of the female allegory changed the way Liberty was depicted on American coins in the 20th century. It shows Liberty in front-facing relief as she walks forward with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. She is framed by sun rays in the background and encircled by a ring of 50 stars. The field includes inscriptions of LIBERTY, 1986, and the W mint mark of the West Point Mint.
Reverse
On the reverse field of 1986-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin is an image of bald eagles that was exclusive to this series at the US Mint. The design was created for this collection in 1986 by Miley Busiek. It shows a male eagle in flight above the nest as a female eagle shelters a hatchling within the nest. The field includes inscriptions of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1 OZ. FINE GOLD – 50 DOLLARS.
History
The 1986 Proof American Eagle Gold Coin was the first-ever release in the series and included only these 1 oz gold coins. The fractional-ounce coins were introduced in two waves between 1987 and 1988. The 1 oz gold coin was the only one of the four issued by the West Point Mint in the early years, as the fractional-ounce coins were struck by the Philadelphia Mint. The 1986 Proof American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coins remains the highest minted in the history of the series, with a mintage more than 300,000 coins higher than the next closest weight and date. However, given its age, it is also one of the hardest to come by with the original packaging included.
