The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Series was launched by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1979 as a global gold bullion option. This series initially aimed to offer an alternative to the South African Krugerrand, growing quickly in popularity. Right now, 1986 Canadian Maple Leaf 1/2 oz Gold Coins are available at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Coin arrives inside a protective plastic flip!
  • 8th release in the Gold Maple Leaf Series!
  • Contains 1/2 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • Issued with a face value of $20 (CAD) backed by Canada.
  • Obverse shows Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Reverse features the iconic sugar maple leaf.

These 1986 Canadian Maple Leaf 1/2 oz Gold Coins arrive in protective plastic packaging to help maintain their condition. The 1/2 oz coin made its first appearance in 1986 as part of the series’ expansion beyond the original 1 oz gold coin introduced in 1979.

Obverse

The obverse of each 1986 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin displays a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This second-generation design by Arnold Machin captures the Queen at the age of 39, offering a look at her in the earlier years of her reign. This right-profile portrait became a familiar image on Canadian coins for many years. The inscriptions read ELIZABETH II, 20 DOLLARS, and 1986.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the 1986 Maple Leaf 1/2 oz Gold Coin is the famous sugar maple leaf, an emblem of Canada. Designed by Walter Ott, this image has remained a hallmark of the Gold Maple Leaf series since its introduction, celebrating Canadas national tree. Its detailed leaf veins and shape make it easily recognizable worldwide. The inscriptions include CANADA, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1/2 OZ OR PUR.

History

The maple leaf design seen on these coins has deep roots in Canadian culture, tracing back to the 18th century. Its eleven-point design with intricate veins represents Canadas natural beauty and heritage. Officially adopted as a national symbol on Canadas flag in 1965, this maple leaf design has since become a symbol of Canadian pride.
