The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is one of the most recognized gold bullion coins around the world. First issued in 1979, it became the first major competitor to the South African Gold Krugerrand. At the start, the Royal Canadian Mint only made the coin in a 1 oz gold version. In 1982, the mint expanded the lineup by adding new fractional sizes like the 1/4 oz coin. Today, 1982 1/4 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins are available online at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Coin arrives inside a protective plastic flip!
  • 3rd year of issue for Gold Maple Leafs!
  • 1st issue of the 1/4 oz Gold Maple Leaf!
  • Contains 1/4 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold in BU condition.
  • Issued a face value of $10 (CAD) by Canada.
  • Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
  • Sugar maple leaf on the reverse.

Each 1982 1/4 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin from Provident Metals is offered in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and comes sealed in a protective plastic flip. The Maple Leaf Series, introduced in 1979, originally featured a 1 oz gold coin made with .999 fine gold. In 1982, the series expanded with fractional sizes and introduced .9999 pure gold.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 1982 1/4 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coin, you will find a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This was the first design of the Queen used on Maple Leaf coins, originally crafted in 1965 by artist Arnold Machin. It features Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 39, shown in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The inscriptions here include ELIZABETH II, 10 DOLLARS, and 1982.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1982 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin shows the iconic sugar maple leaf. This artwork, created by Walter Ott in 1979, displays a detailed, natural version of a sugar maple leaf. It has become the official design for all Maple Leaf coins, whether minted in gold, silver, platinum, or palladium. Inscriptions here include CANADA, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1/4 OZ OR PUR.

History

Besides its visual appeal, the sugar maple leaf serves important functions for the tree. Its wide surface collects sunlight for photosynthesis, while its lobed design helps the tree manage heat and withstand strong winds. The petiole, or stem, includes special cells that help the leaf separate cleanly from the branch in the fall as the tree gets ready for winter.
