Each 1981 Mexican Libertad 1/2 oz Gold Coin comes in a protective plastic flip. The debut year of 1981 featured 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz gold coins, with the 1/2 oz coin having the lowest mintage of the three.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1981 Mexican Libertad Gold Coin features the modern coat of arms of Mexico. This design includes a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, fighting a serpent with its beak and talons, and is surrounded by a wreath of oak and laurel leaves. After Mexico gained independence in 1821, the newly formed government created a coat of arms featuring the eagle without a crown, symbolizing freedom from Spanish rule. This version also included oak and laurel branches tied with ribbons of the national colors (green, white, and red). The inscription reads ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.

Reverse

On the reverse side, the 1981 Libertad 1/2 oz Gold Coins present the historic Winged Victory statue. First seen on the Gold Centenario coin in 1921, this design shows the front-facing image of Winged Victory, a prominent figure atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City. Inscriptions include 1/2 ONZA, ORO PURO, MEXICO, 1981, and the mint mark.

History

The Mexican Mint began the Gold Libertads series in 1981, marking the start of this iconic coin series. Although there was a gap in annual production until 1991, five different weights were introduced that year. Since 2002, the Mexican Mint has been producing these coins every year.
