Obverse inscriptions are included that read SUID-AFRIKA, SOUTH AFRICA.

Reverse

A Springbok antelope is found on the reverse field of 1980 South African Krugerrand Gold Coins. You will find hallmarks on the reverse as well reading KRUGERRAND, 1980, FYNGOUD, 1 OZ FINE GOLD.

History

While 1 oz gold coins are extremely common today, in the 1960s they were non-existent. Due to South Africas heavy gold output, officials determined that minting gold coins in a basic 1 oz weight would attract an entirely new class of investors. By 1970, the Krugerrand was being mass-produced, and within a decade it accounted for over 90% of the worlds coin market. Its success prompted other countries to develop their own 1 oz pieces, including classics like the Canadian Maple Leaf, British Britannia, and American Eagle.
