{{/presale}}This was the first year that the Proof Set included Susan B. Anthony Dollar, which was the first circulating coin to have a woman featured on it. This new dollar design is considered to be the reason for the increase in Proof Set sales, going from 3,127,781 sets in 1978 to 3,677,175 sets in 1979. There are 2 different styles of mint marks in the Proof coins Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 mint marks have the area inside the letter filled while Type 2 mint marks are clear and flat on top. Fewer Type 2 examples exist. The Set still contains 6 coins, and the original issue price remains at $9.00. The coins are Proof specimens, made by the US Mint in San Francisco. Provident Metals currently has the 1979 US Mint Proof Set available for purchase.
Highlights:
Each 1979 Proof Set includes one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, Kennedy Half Dollar, and the new Susan B. Anthony Dollar.
Obverse
The Anthony Dollar obverse features a right-facing profile of Susan B. Anthony, the social reformer. This new and smaller dollar initially had a bust of Liberty design for the obverse, however, several individuals within Congress and numerous womens organizations requested that it was time to depict a real woman on a coin. Susan B. Anthony was the woman who garnered the most support from numerous sources. Both of the obverse designs were the creation of Frank Gasparro. Inscriptions are LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 1979.
Reverse
The Anthony Dollar reverse retained the reverse design from the Eisenhower Dollar. An engraving of the Apollo 11 mission insignia, featuring an eagle landing on the moon. Included is an image of the earth, just above and to the left of the eagles head. Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro created this design. Inscriptions are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
The 1979 Proof Set packaging did not undergo any changes from previous years. It still consists of 6 coins arranged in a black plastic frame that has a red background. This frame fits into a black folder clearly identifying it as a Proof Set. However, with the introduction of the smaller Susan B. Anthony dollar, a minor accommodation had to be made for the size difference of the dollar coins. The Anthony Dollar is inserted into a round plastic ring, which is then placed into the larger spot previously occupied by the Eisenhower Dollar. The packaging would be changed in 1980.
