Obverse
On the obverse side of 1976 Bicentennial Quarters is an effigy of George Washington. Designed by John Flanagan in 1932 for the original US quarter, this portrait depicts the President facing the left side in the style of classical busts. Youll see inscriptions reading LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1776-1976.
Reverse
The reverse of Bicentennial Prism Hologram Quarters shows a colonial drummer wearing a Tricorne hat. He holds a stick in each hand and has the drum hanging from around the neck. A victory torch is also shown with thirteen stars in a circle around it. These stars signal the 13 states that were part of the union when the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th, 1776. Youll find inscriptions on the reverse that read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, QUARTER DOLLAR, E PLURIBUS UNUM.
History
In 1973, the US Treasury held a contest for the new design to be featured on the reverse of the bicentennial quarter. Ultimately, a $5000 prize was awarded to Jack L. Ahr for his iconic colonial drummer design. In addition to the 1.7 billion quarters that were released, the US Mint also issued 7 million proof sets, 11 million 40% silver bicentennial quarters, and 4 million 40% silver proof sets.
