As Canada prepared to host its first-ever modern Olympic Games in 1976, the Royal Canadian Mint and Government of Canada developed a series of commemorative silver and gold releases for collectors to purchase. The sale of these coins was designed to help fund the cost of hosting the games. These coins were released across various series, with just two gold coin options struck. Right now, you can buy 1976 $100 Canadian Olympic 1/4 oz Gold Coins online at Provident Metals.

Obverse

The obverse side of 1976 $100 Canadian Olympic Gold Coins features a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile portrait was the last design not created by a Canadian artist to feature on Canadian coins. Designed by Arnold Machin, it was used on Canadian coins from 1965 to 1989 and featured on coinage throughout the Commonwealth nations and England. The inscriptions on this face include ELIZABETH II, CANADA, and 1976. There is a maple leaf at the bottom arch of the design field between the Queens name and the nation of issue.

Reverse

On the reverse face of 1976 Canadian Olympic 1/4 oz Gold Coins, you will find the image of an Ancient Greek Olympian. This figure is shown with the goddess of war, Athena, at his side offering him a laurel crown. The design on this side includes inscriptions of 100 DOLLARS and 776 B.C. 1976 A.D. There is also a Greek inscription along the bottom with the number 21, denoting the 1976 Summer Olympics as the 21st Olympiad.

History

The release of commemorative coins by the Royal Canadian Mint to mark the 1976 Summer Olympics ran from 1973 to 1976. In total, 28 silver coins were struck and issued against just two gold coins. The gold coins created some confusion as these 1/4 oz gold coins had 14-karat gold and were issued as BU specimens originally, while a 1/2 oz gold coin with the same $100 (CAD) face value was also issued, but offered proof visuals and 22-karat gold content.
