The 1974 US Mint Proof Set maintained the popularity of Proof Sets by selling 2,612,568 sets, only a small drop off from 1973 sales. In 1974, it continued as a 6 coin set, once again including the copper-nickel clad version of the Eisenhower Dollar. With the exception of the Lincoln Cent, each of the coins is a Proof-only issue. The Proof finish on the coins enhances their beauty and shine. This set was made by the US Mint in San Francisco. Right now, Provident Metals has the 1974 US Mint Proof Set available for purchase.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in a hard plastic case with an outer box!
  • Six 1974 coins from the US Mint are included!
  • Proof specimens.
  • Each coin bears its respective face value in US dollars.
  • Each denomination has its own obverse and reverse design.
  • Issued total of 2,612,568 proof sets in 1974.
  • Please note you may get sets without some shipping pieces, but all coins are still in the hard plastic cases for all sets.

The Proof Set consists of one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, Kennedy Half Dollar, and Eisenhower Dollar (Copper-Nickel clad).

The coins are separated by raised rings of plastic. A red felt-covered paper insert was added, promoting the beauty and shine of the coins. This is sealed in a two-piece clear plastic case, which is then inserted into a black plastic frame. The frame has a hinged flap, allowing it to be flipped over to display the coins.

Obverse

The obverse of the Washington Quarter features a left-facing bust of George Washington, designed by sculptor John Flanagan. In 1785, French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon was commissioned to sculpt a bust of Washington, which Washington sat for in October 1785. That bust has been the basis for portraits of Washington on medals and other media. Flanagans coin depiction differs slightly from Houdons version in that the shape of the head is different and the coin has a roll of hair that the bust doesnt. Inscriptions on the obverse include Liberty, In God We Trust, and 1974.

Reverse

The reverse of the Washington Quarter features an eagle with wings outspread perched on a bundle of arrows, framed below by two olive branches. This also was the design of sculptor John Flanagan. Inscriptions on the reverse include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and QUARTER DOLLAR.

History

The US Mint offered a 40% silver Eisenhower Dollar as a separate option.
