{{/presale}}Many of the coin designs still in use by the United States Mint today for circulation denominations have roots in the 20th-century issuance of 90% silver coins by the mint. Each of the dime, quarter, and half-dollar designs still in use today was once available with 90% silver content. Provident Metals currently offers 1964 90% Silver Kennedy Half Dollars for online purchasing.
Highlights:
When you purchase the $500 Face Value bag of 1964 Silver Kennedy Half Dollar Coins, you will receive a total of 250 individual coins in a bag. The only Kennedy Half Dollar date mark that qualifies for this issue with 90% silver is 1964. Starting in 1965, all other denominations moved to a cupro-nickel alloy while the Kennedy Half Dollar adopted a lower silver content through the remainder of the 1960s.
Obverse
On the obverse face of 1964 90% Silver Kennedy Half Dollars is the image of President John F. Kennedy. This bust of Kennedy was created earlier in the decade by Gilroy Roberts and was even approved by Kennedy himself for use on his Presidential Medal Series. It features President Kennedy in left-profile relief with Liberty engraved above his head and In God We Trust near his neck.
Reverse
The reverse side of 1964 90% Silver Kennedy Half Dollars is a depiction of the modified presidential seal. Created by Frank Gasparro, the image is based on the heraldic eagle of the United States and features the American bald eagle with the national shield on its chest, arrows in one talon, and an olive branch in the other talon.
History
President Kennedys bust was chosen to replace the Benjamin Franklin Half Dollar design in January 1964, just three months after his assassination in November 1963. Kennedy Half Dollar coins were only available in 1964 with 90% silver content. From 1965 to 1970, while all other coins shifted to the cupro-nickel alloy, the Kennedy Half Dollar continued with 40% silver content and 60% copper content before making the switch the cupro-nickel alloy itself in 1971.
