{{/presale}}The immense popularity of the Proof Sets with coin collectors pushed the number of sets sold past the 3 million mark for the second year in a row. The 1962 total sales of 3,218,019 was an all-time high for Proof Sets up to that date. Due to their popularity, the US Mint set a limit of no more than 10 sets per order since collectors were purchasing multiple sets either for their own collections or for speculative purposes. These 1962 coins were some of the last to be struck in 90% silver. They are proof strikes, making them more visually beautiful. Presently, 1962 US Mint Proof Sets are available for purchase online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
German-born American sculptor Felix Schlag designed both the obverse and the reverse of the Jefferson Nickel. His design for the coin was selected by the Director of the US Mint, Nellie Tayloe Ross, in 1938. Schlag won $1,000 for this winning design.
Obverse
The obverse of the Jefferson Nickel features a left-facing bust of President Thomas Jefferson, including a colonial-era pigtail. The bust is so large that it takes up the majority of the obverse, leaving minimal room for the various inscriptions.
Reverse
The reverse of the Jefferson Nickel features a front view of Jeffersons mansion, Monticello, near Charlottesville, Virginia. The Monticello was designed by Jefferson himself.
History
Proof Sets include one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and the Franklin Half Dollar. In 1962, these coins were some of the last to contain 90% fine silver. Beginning in 1965, the Proof Sets were reduced to 40% fine silver (silver clad).
The set is sealed in a plastic pouch that contains the 5 coins plus an octagonal foil seal imprinted with US MINT PHILADELPHIA. The pouch is then inserted into a Treasury Department US Mint manila envelope. Sets starting in 1973 began to include either 5, 6, or 7 coins.
