Before the advent of the modern nickel, the U.S. Mint issued a coin known as the Buffalo nickel, featuring the eponymous herd animal and designed by James Earle Frasier to be as distinctively American as possible in its artistic themes. Despite its attractiveness, difficulties in striking the coin led to the creation of its replacement in the Jefferson nickel, featuring images of the nation’s third President and of his famous home that were just as specifically American as its predecessor coin. With various adjustments to the design, this nickel has remained in circulation to this day, with certain years of surviving uncirculated coins becoming collectors’ items due to their relative rarity. The 1962 Gem Proof Jefferson Nickel is available for online purchase from Provident Metals.

Obverse & Reverse

The obverse side of the coin features a profile effigy of Thomas Jefferson accompanied by the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “LIBERTY – 1962.” The reverse features an engraving of the legendary mansion of Monticello, along with the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “MONTICELLO” and “FIVE CENTS.”

History

1962 Jefferson nickels with certified uncirculated grades are one of the less common versions of this modern nickel. Those coins with a “Gem Uncirculated” grade have the equivalent of a Mint State 65 rating or above, coins whose worldwide supply is estimated by experts at around 120,000 pieces according to a wide range of criteria. These rarer pieces make a worthy addition to any collection, carrying a design made by the German-born sculptor Felix Schlag in response to a contest initiated by the U.S. Mint to replace the “Buffalo nickel” in 1938. It’s a coin whose attractiveness and practicality have made it a permanent fixture of American currency ever since its first striking.
