Wheat Penny collectors often seek out Red versions of this popular Lincoln cent that was minted between 1909 and 1958. Wheat cents deemed Red will have a minimum 95% of their original red luster. Compared to Brown and Red Brown versions, the Red Wheat Pennies have an alluring shine and rich red gleam. Today, you have the chance to get the 1955-S Lincoln Wheat Penny in certified condition online at Provident Metals.

NGC was founded in 1987 and is one of the leading certification companies in the world today. On a scale of 1-70, these coins have received a grade of Mint State 67. They have also designated Red, meaning they retain a minimum of 95% of their original luster.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the 1955-S Wheat Penny, there is an effigy of President Abraham Lincoln. This is the classic portrait that has been present on all US one-cent pieces since 1909. In it, we see Lincoln facing right with his beloved chin curtain beard. Also present on the obverse are inscriptions that read IN GOD WE TRUST, 1955.

Reverse

The reverse of 1955-S Lincoln Pennies contains ears of durum wheat on either side of the field. Set between these stalks are inscriptions that read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE CENT. Above this is an additional inscription reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Both the reverse and the obverse designs are credited to engraver Victor D. Brenner.

History

In designing the famous reverse of the original Lincoln Cent, sculptor Victor D. Brenner was advised by US Mint director Frank Leach to lean towards a simple, uncomplicated aesthetic style. Ultimately, he chose two sheaves of wheat, which represent industry, growth, and prosperity. Leach approved of the design, and in 1909, the Wheat Penny debuted exactly 100 years after Lincolns birth.
