{{/presale}}Celebrating Mexico’s last Aztec Emperor, Provident Metals carries 1947 – 1948 Cuauhtmoc Mexican 5 Peso coins. Composed of .8680 troy ounces of .900 pure silver, each coin will arrive in extra fine condition or better and dates are of our choice.
The obverse of these Mexican 5 Pesos features Cuauhtmoc, the Aztec tlatoani (which means ruler, speaker or king) who controlled the city-state of Tenochtitlan from 1520 to 1521.
The coin features the left-facing profile of Cuauhtmoc — who surrendered to the Spanish and was executed by Hernn Corts in 1525 — in full headdress. It is inscribed with the words CINCO PESOS, 30 GRAMOS LEY 0.900, the year of issue and the mint mark MO, for the Mexico City Mint.
The reverse of each 1947 – 1948 Cuauhtmoc Silver 5 Peso features the Mexican coat of arms: an eagle with a snake in its beak, standing atop a cactus. The design is particularly fitting, since the name Cuauhtmoc means One Who Has Descended Like an Eagle. The coin is inscribed with the words ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS, or United Mexican States.
History of the Mexican Mint
La Casa de Moneda de Mxico is the oldest mint to open on the American continents. Established by viceroy Antonio de Mendoza of Spain in 1535, the mint was mandated by King Charles I, who was eager to open the first New World mint.
For the next 400 years, silver eight-reales and pesos circulated widely across the Americas and into Asia. In 1947, the Mexican government unveiled a silver five peso coin called the Cuauhtmoc, which celebrated the famous Mexican leader. Today, all Mexican coins are produced in San Luis Potos, though the mint is headquartered at the Museo Nacional de las Culturas in Mexico City.
