{{/presale}}The United States Silver Certificate was in circulation from 1878 to 1968, though production of new notes ceased in 1964. The collection went through various changes in its history, from formatting that saw the original large-sized notes replaced by small-sized notes to changes in the designs and available denominations. One of the notes that stands out the most in the history of this series is the 1935a Series $1 Note. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase Very-Fine condition 1935a $1 Silver Certificate Hawaii Notes online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The Hawaii Overprint Notes were designed by the United States for release only in Hawaii with special features that made them instantly recognizable. Rather than the blue ink used on 1935A Series Silver Certificates, these notes had brown ink for the serial numbers and the Treasury seal. Additionally, the word Hawaii was overprinted above the reverse design and printed in small text on the obverse. The goal was to be able to recognize and quickly demonetize the notes in the event of a Japanese invasion of the islands.
Obverse
On the obverse of 1935a $1 Silver Certificate Hawaii Notes is an image of President George Washington at the center. The important features to note on this side are the serial numbers and Treasury seal with the brown ink, as well as the word Hawaii printed vertically along the left side of the note.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1935a $1 Silver Certificate Hawaii Notes features the all-seeing eye on the left and the Great Seal of the United States on the right. This design element was approved by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1935, though he suggested altering it to this arrangement from the originally proposed element with the all-seeing eye on the right and the Great Seal on the left. The notable feature on this face of the note is the large overprint of HAWAII over the design element.
History
The United States issued the famous Hawaii Overprint Notes on four denominations. The $1 Silver Certificate was the only denomination in its collection, while the Federal Reserve Notes were also issued with the Hawaii Overprint on the denominations of $5, $10, and $20. The 1935 Series Silver Certificate consisted of the initial 1935 redesign and the A, B, C, D, E, F, and G minor alterations through 1957. The 1935a World War II notes were part of the 1935A Series, with the smaller a indicating the special emergency issues.
