Obverse

The obverse side of 1934 $500 Federal Reserve Notes features a portrait of President William McKinley. When the Federal Reserve redesigned the notes in 1934, the portrait of the 25th President of the United States was added to this bill. President McKinley presided over a period of economic recovery and growth in the United States, and also oversaw the successful execution of the Spanish-American War.

Reverse

On the reverse field of the 1934 $500 Federal Reserve Note are depictions of the denomination of the note. The four corners of the note have notations of 500, while that same notation is featured above and below the central design. The most ornate piece of the design element is found in the center with a large, oval shape that has another notation of 500 inside.

History

The Federal Reserve Note was introduced by the United States in 1914. The 1914 Series release included denominations of $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. The 1918 Series introduced denominations no longer in use in the United States: $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000. The 1934 Series $500 note was removed from circulation in the United States starting in July 1969. The notes were, in reality, primarily used for transactions between banks and not commonly found in the hands of everyday Americans.
