The establishment of the Federal Reserve in 1914 led to the release of a new form of paper currency that remains, a century after the fact, the only form of paper money still in circulation in the United States. Federal Reserve Notes were introduced in two waves in 1914 and 1918, with the latter featuring denominations the US took out of circulation starting in the 1960s. Surviving specimens from this era are prized collector items. Right now, you can buy certified 1934 $1000 Federal Reserve Notes online at Provident Metals.

Obverse

President Grover Cleveland features on the obverse of 1934 $1000 Federal Reserve Notes. President Cleveland had previously featured on the 1914 Series $20 Federal Reserve Note, but that notes 1929 redesign for the small-sized format replaced President Cleveland with President Andrew Jacksons bust. This portrait of President Cleveland is the same as was previously used on the $20 note.

Reverse

The denomination of the 1934 $1000 Federal Reserve Note is the only design element featured on this side. Previously, these notes had featured ornate portrait elements, but the 1934 Series introduced simpler notes with a clean field and only notations of the denomination.

History

The 1934 Series was the first and last redesign of the 1918 Series Federal Reserve Notes. These notes remained in circulation among banks and the federal government until the 1960s. At this point, the notes were removed from circulation, with most completely gone by 1971. Many of those notes were simply destroyed, making surviving specimens a treat to behold.
