She is depicted walking forward, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The design also includes the U.S. Capitol Building, rays of light, and a ring of 48 stars. The inscriptions read LIBERTY and 1927.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1927 Pre-33 $20 Double Eagle Gold Coins features a magnificent portrayal of the American bald eagle. The eagle is shown in left-profile relief, soaring through the air as the sun rises from the horizon at the edge of the coin. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and TWENTY DOLLARS.

History

In 1933, amidst the Great Depression and the ongoing economic crisis, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued an executive order prohibiting the hoarding of gold. As a result, the production of gold coins, including the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, was temporarily halted. Nearly all of the 1933 double eagles were ordered to be melted down, except for a few that were saved for numismatic purposes.
