Obverse

On the obverse of this Standing Liberty Silver Quarter, Lady Liberty is depicted. Positioned between a gap in a wall, Liberty stands upright with a shield and an olive branch. Youll notice her head is turned to the right, which is a reference to the East where WWI was being fought when the coin was designed. Inscriptions on the obverse read IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and 1917.

Reverse

The reverse of 1917 Standing Liberty Silver Quarters features a bald eagle. While some American coins depict a heraldic eagle rendition, this one presents the bird in a more naturalistic fashion as it soars with open wings to the right. Other features on the reverse include rows of stars and inscriptions reading UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and QUARTER DOLLAR.

History

While the Standing Liberty design from Hermon Atkins MacNeil is iconic, many of the surviving coins have a faded, blurred quality. This is why PCGS offers a special Full Head designation for those quarters that display a crisp level of detail around the hair and wreath of Miss Liberty. Made of 90% silver, The Standing Liberty Quarter replaced the Barber Quarter in 1916 and was produced through 1930.
