Obverse
A portrait of William McKinley is shown on the obverse of these 1917 $1 McKinley Coins. US Mint chief engraver Charles Barber designed the image, which features President McKinley in left-profile relief. Youll find inscriptions on the obverse that read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, MCKINLEY, DOLLAR.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1917 McKinley Coin shows the National McKinley Birthplace Memorial. George T. Morgan designed the image based on the actual site which stands in Niles, Ohio. The building has a neoclassical look and includes a flag sticking up from the top. The words MCKINLEY BIRTHPLACE, NILES OHIO, 1917 MEMORIAL are inscribed as well.
History
The United States issued these 1917 McKinley gold pieces in part to help fund the National McKinley Birthplace Memorial. The plan for the site was agreed upon by President Taft in 1911. A contest was held to determine the buildings design, which was eventually won in 1915 by McKim, Mead, & White, an architect firm based in New York. The design has strong Greek and Roman themes and includes a statue of McKinley set just behind the front pillars. The Memorial remains open for visitors six days a week in McKinleys hometown of Niles, Ohio.
