Although the US $10 Eagle Gold Coin was issued by the United States Mint from 1795 to 1933, it is not surprising to note that some of the date marks in the collection are rarer than others. What is perhaps surprising is the fact that some of the rarest issues come from later date marks in the series. The 1916-S Indian Eagle Gold Coin is a perfect example. Provident Metals currently offers the 1916-S Pre-33 $10 Indian Eagle Gold Coin to you for purchase online.

When you purchase a 1916-S Pre-33 $10 Indian Eagle Gold Coin through this Provident Metals listing, you will receive one of the rarest surviving Pre-33 $10 Indian Eagles inside an individual plastic flip. These coins are offered in Extremely Fine+ condition. This term indicates the coins have only light wear and tear present on the highest points of relief with some traces of the original mint luster still possible.

From an original mintage of 138,500 1916-S $10 Indian Eagles, an estimated 2% of the coins survive today. Most were collected by the federal government and melted down in the 1930s. As a result, this is considered the 10th scarcest coin in the series.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1916-S Pre-33 $10 Indian Eagle features an effigy of Lady Liberty. The effigy is set in left-profile relief and depicts Liberty wearing a feathered headdress. There are 13 stars arranged in a half-moon constellation over her head with 1916 engraved below.

Reverse

On the reverse side of 1916-S Pre-33 $10 Indian Eagle Gold Coins is a depiction of the American bald eagle. In this design, the eagle is shown with its wings at its side as it sits perched on a sheaf of arrows. The sheaf has an olive branch wrapped around it. There are inscriptions on this face of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, TEN DOLLARS, and the S mint mark from the San Francisco Mint.

History

The $10 Indian Eagle Gold Coin was struck annually from 1907 to 1916. These 1916-S Pre-33 $10 Indian Eagles are unique in more ways than one. Beyond being a scarce date mark in the 21st century, these were the only versions of the Indian Eagle struck in 1916. Additionally, the coins were the last ones issued in the series before the U.S. entered World War I. Moreover, there would be only five more date marks issued in this series before its cancellation in 1933, with only two subsequent San Francisco strikes in 1920 and 1930.
