{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The Barber Quarter was produced by the United States Mint from 1892 until 1916 and has long held interest for coin collectors. Over time, appreciation for the series has grown as numismatists recognize both its attractive design and the challenge of assembling a full collection. The coin was designed by Charles E. Barber, the Chief Engraver of the US Mint, and quarters in this series were struck at four different mint facilities throughout its production. As a result, the collection includes a number of scarce dates and condition rarities. The coin offered here is a 1916-D Barber Quarter from the final year of the series, graded Mint State 62 by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Right now, the 1916-D Barber Quarter is available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1916-D Barber Quarter available in this listing is graded MS62. Coins at this level typically show decent overall visual appeal but will display several noticeable contact marks. Groups of small marks are common across the surfaces, and a few larger marks may appear in the central fields. Hairlines are usually visible without magnification on coins of this grade.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1916-D Barber Quarter shows a profile image of Liberty facing right. Charles E. Barber created the design in a classical style consistent with his other coinage work for the Mint. Liberty wears a Phrygian cap, historically associated with freedom, which is decorated with a laurel wreath symbolizing victory. A ribbon ties the cap behind her head, completing the portrait. The inscriptions include IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and 1916.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1916-D Barber Quarter, the design features the heraldic eagle of the United States. The eagle appears with wings spread and a shield positioned across its chest. In its right talon, the eagle holds an olive branch, while its left talon grasps a bundle of thirteen arrows. These elements symbolize the nations preference for peace but readiness to defend itself when necessary. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and QUARTER DOLLAR.
History
The 1916-D Barber Quarter marks the closing year of the broader Barber Coinage Series, which also included the Barber Dime and Barber Half Dollar. These coins circulated widely in the United States for more than two decades. During 1916, the US Mint was already transitioning to new designs, and the Standing Liberty Quarter began to replace the Barber design that same year.
