{{/presale}}The ducat coin was commonly used in trade throughout Europe from the late Middle Ages through the start of the 20th century. Some of the last ducat coins were minted during the time leading up to World War I in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Right now, you can purchase the 1915 Austrian/Dutch 4 Ducat Gold Coin in Almost Uncirculated (AU+) condition at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The first ducat coins were released in 1140 by King Roger II of Sicily. Originally, they were offered in both gold and silver to be used as trade coins. Now, Provident Metals sells these unique coins that offer buyers a little slice of world history.
Obverse
The obverse of these coins bears the image of Franz Joseph I, Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1867 at its formation until he died in 1916. He is featured in right-profile relief with a wreath crown atop his head. This design shows a younger Joseph I than he wouldve been at the time. All inscriptions on the edge of the coin are in Latin.
Reverse
The reverse side of these coins bears the Austro-Hungarian Empire coat of Arms. The double-headed eagle holds the shield of the Hapsburg Dynasty to symbolize the rulers of the Austrian Empire during this time. The eagle clutches a sword in one talon and proudly wears a crown. On this side of the coin, you can see the mintage year and face value of the gold coin.
History
Ducat coins have a unique history unlike many of the coins we see on the market today. Austria began to issue ducats in 1511 during the reign of Emperor Maximilian, the Holy Roman Emperor. By the end of the ducats production run, they bore the image of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The final strike and release of these coins into active circulation were minted by the Austrian Mint in 1914, and the 1915 Austrian/Dutch 4 Ducat Gold Coins bear the same design.
