Each 1913-S $20 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin available here comes housed in a protective slab and graded MS61. Coins at this level show impaired mint luster and a mix of large and small contact marks across the surfaces. You may notice light patches of hairlines or a single continuous hairline visible to the eye.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1913-S $20 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Coin features Liberty walking forward toward the viewer. She holds a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, framed by sunrays in the background and surrounded by a circle of stars. The inscriptions here include LIBERTY, 1913, and the S mint mark.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1913-S Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin, an eagle soars in left-profile relief above the rising sun. This issue is one of the lowest-minted coins of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Series, with only 34,000 struck. It ranks as the third-lowest mintage in the series and the second-lowest from San Francisco after the 1908-S. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and TWENTY DOLLARS.
History
Saint-Gaudens Liberty design had a lasting influence on both sculpture and coin design. Its impact helped guide the artistry of modern U.S. coins for decades. When the American Gold Eagle bullion series debuted in 1986, the Mint chose to honor Saint-Gaudens design once again, preserving his creative legacy more than a century later.
