One of the most famous coin designs in American history is the one that was introduced on the humble US Penny in 1909. The bust of President Abraham Lincoln on the obverse is famous in that it was the first American presidents portrait to feature on widely circulated coinage, and also due to the fact that it remains on the penny more than a century later. It is the reverse field of these particular Lincoln Wheat Pennies that makes the coins even more famous. The additional RD designation indicates the coins have a red mint luster common in copper coinage.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1909 Lincoln Wheat Penny comes with a right-profile bust of President Abraham Lincoln. This design was created by Victor David Brenner in 1909 and is based on a February 9, 1864, photograph taken of the 16th President of the United States of America. The inscriptions on this side include IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and 1909.

Reverse

On the reverse side of 1909 VDB Lincoln Wheat Pennies is a depiction of wheat stalks. Here, the two wheat stalks are featured at the edges of the design field and flank the inscriptions of ONE CENT and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the center of the coins design field. The other inscriptions on this side include E PLURIBUS UNUM and the VDB initials of designer Victor David Brenner.

History

The 1909 Lincoln Wheat Penny was historic and memorable in many ways. As mentioned, it was the last major redesign of the US Penny, the longest-used obverse design of any American coin, and was also a controversial release in its prominent inclusion of the designer’s VDB initials. 1909 VDB Lincoln Pennies were only struck until August of that year, with the US Mint removing his initials and striking the coins without them going forward.
