The US Half Eagle Gold Coins from the United States Mint were produced from 1795 to 1929. The $5 gold coin went through five designs in its 120-plus year history, with the 1908 date mark being one of the most unique in the series as it offered two designs in one year as the series transitioned from its 19th-century design to its 20th-century design. Today, you have the opportunity to buy 1908 Pre-33 Indian and Liberty Half Eagle Gold 2-Coin Sets online from Provident Metals.

The 1908 Indian Head Half Eagle Gold Coin in this two-coin set is one of the most distinctive in American history. Introduced in 1908, the design was the first-ever incuse strike on American coinage. An incuse design is struck into the surface of the coin, creating relief beneath the flat surface of the coin rather than engraving the designs onto the surface of the coin in 3D relief.

1908 Liberty Half Eagle

For the obverse design of 1908 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins, Christian Gobrechts left-profile effigy of Lady Liberty. The image shows Liberty with her hair back in a bun while wearing a coronet in her hair. There are 13 stars around her figure and an inscription at the bottom of 1908. In the reverse field of 1908 Liberty Half Eagles, Gobrechts heraldic eagle features with a change made in 1866, long after his death. The heraldic eagle supports the US national shield and clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. Above its head, there is a banner that was added in 1866 with the inscription In God We Trust. Other inscriptions include United States of America and Five D.

1908 Indian Head Half Eagle

In the obverse design of the 1908 Indian Head Half Eagle, a new design from Bela Lyon Pratt joins the long-running series. The bust shown here captures an indigenous figure with a ceremonial feathered headdress. This coin has inscriptions of Liberty and 1908 on this face, with six stars off the figures nose and seven behind the headdress. For the reverse design, 1908 Indian Head Half Eagles feature an American bald eagle resting on its perch of a sheaf of arrows. There is an olive branch around the sheaf. Inscriptions include United States of America, In God We Trust, E Pluribus Unum, and Five Dollars.

History

1908 remains a distinctive date mark in this series as the year started with Liberty Half Eagle coining and ended with Indian Head Half Eagle coining, splitting the resources for Half Eagle gold production between the two designs. Limited coins are available today from this date mark as massive quantities of the coins were melted in the 1930s.
