His bold, artistic style turned simple currency into a work of art, though the original high-relief strike was later modified for regular minting. All 1908 Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins offered here are the No Motto variety, each certified as MS64. These coins feature an average or sometimes slightly above-average strike, with a few noticeable marks or hairlines possible, though additional flaws are minor.
Obverse
On the obverse of 1908 Pre-33 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Coins, Lady Liberty is shown in full length as she steps forward carrying a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. At her feet sits the U.S. Capitol, with rays of sunshine and a circle of stars filling the background. The inscriptions here include LIBERTY and 1908.
Reverse
The reverse of 1908 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coins displays the American bald eagle in flight. Shown in left-profile relief, the eagle glides above the rising sun with wings raised high. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS.
History
When first introduced in 1907, the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle brought a completely new look to American coinage. The 1908 issue is especially important because two different versions were produced. Early in the year, coins left the Mint without the IN GOD WE TRUST motto. Later, after public reaction, the motto was added, resulting in 1908 No Motto and 1908 With Motto varieties.
