Obverse

The obverse of the $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is one of America’s most iconic coinage designs. An image of Lady Liberty is shown striding forward with the rising sun in the background. She holds a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The U.S. Capitol is shown towards the lower left. The inscription “LIBERTY” appears at the top of the coin.

Reverse

The coin’s reverse shows a flying eagle above a rising sun. The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS” appear towards the top of the reverse. On this particular issue, the legend “IN GOD WE TRUST” is conspicuously missing. Virtually all $20 Double Eagles made from 1866 through 1933 feature these words, but 1907 and select 1908 specimens do not.

About the 1907 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin

The $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is arguably America’s most beautiful coin. Few coins offer such an unbeatable combination of aesthetic quality and historical allure. The 1907 issue, in addition to being a rare date, has the distinction of being the first year of issue. As such, the 1907 “Saint” is an extremely popular and historically significant issue.

The 1907 $20 Saint is one of two “No Motto” issues in the series. When the famous sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens redesigned the Double Eagle, he neglected to place the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” on the coin. The artist personally believed that religious references did not belong on U.S. currency. Most Americans disagreed, as did Congress. In 1908, a law was passed ordering the United States Mint to restore this emblem to the $20 Double Eagle.
