{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The Liberty Head Nickel series was issued by the United States Mint from 1883 through 1912 and remains an interesting chapter in American coin collecting. Designed by Charles E. Barber, the coins are closely associated with the famous 1913 Liberty Head Nickel, an extremely rare issue known in only five surviving examples. Although that coin is among the most famous rarities in numismatics, the entire series continues to draw attention for its classic appearance, historical setting during the late 19th century, and the relatively approachable challenge of assembling a date-and-mint-mark set. This 1906 nickel is a proof example certified PR64 by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Today, certified 1906 Liberty Head Nickels are available online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These 1906 Liberty Head Nickels are available in PR64 condition. As proof coins, these examples show pleasing visual appeal and solid mint luster. A few small contact marks may appear, sometimes clustered together, and one or two moderate marks may also be present. Minor hairline patches may be visible as well, along with light scuffs or small surface flaws.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1906 Liberty Head Nickel is a left-facing image of Liberty created in the neoclassical style used by Charles E. Barber. Liberty wears a coronet inscribed with her name, and her hair is neatly gathered behind her head. The portrait has a balanced and simple appearance that reflects the artistic style common to American coinage of the late 1800s. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1906.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1906 Liberty Head Nickel displays a large Roman numeral V, representing the coins five-cent denomination. Encircling the numeral is a wreath made from cotton, corn, wheat, and tobacco plants. These crops were chosen to symbolize agricultural production in the United States, and the wreath is tied neatly at the bottom with a ribbon. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and V.
History
The 1906 Liberty Head Nickel was struck exclusively at the Philadelphia Mint and does not feature a mint mark, which was typical for coins produced there during this period. The total mintage reached roughly 38.6 million pieces, placing the 1906 issue among the more widely available dates in the series. While circulated examples are not difficult to find, higher-quality pieces with strong detail and preserved surfaces are less common today due to the extensive circulation the coins experienced.
