{{/presale}}Issued in the iconic large format, these silver certificates from 1899 are an exciting option for collectors of historic paper currency. Because of their large size, the designers of these iconic notes had greater liberty to experiment with more complex artwork. This is on full display with these $2 notes, which feature ornate and quite beautiful imagery across the front design. Provident Metals currently offers 1899 $2 Silver Certificate Notes in Very Fine condition to you for purchase online.
Note Highlights:
Each of these 1899 $2 Certificate Notes is considered to be in Very Fine 20 condition. This grade was assigned by PCGS and appears on a label above the notes protective currency sleeve. The grade indicates that numerous folds could be present on the note in addition to some crumple marks. While no serious defects will be visible, you may find some minor flaws across the surface. These notes were originally redeemable for genuine silver coins. Today, they are merely recognized as legal tender by the federal government of the United States.
Obverse
George Washington is depicted on the obverse of these $2 Silver Certificate Notes. Allegorical representations of Mechanics and Agriculture are also shown to the left and right of the presidents portrait. In blue ink you will find both the serial number and the Treasury seal on the obverse side. The signatures of the Treasurer and Secretary of the Treasury are shown as well.
Reverse
The denomination of the note is depicted on the reverse of 1899 $2 Silver Certificates. Youll see the denomination in each corner of the note in numerical form. The reverse also contains a decorative border pattern and text that reads United States of America, Two Dollars, Silver Certificate.
History
Sometimes jokingly referred to as Horse Blankets, the large format silver certificate was printed from 1878 up through 1927. Then in 1928, the Treasury introduced a small format note for all denominations to save paper and increase production speed. The $2 silver certificate arrived in 1886 and continued until the 1899 Series. They were then discontinued in favor of more standard denominations.
