{{/presale}}The Morgan Silver Dollar was minted by the United States Mint at several locations between 1878 and 1904, with one final production in 1921. The New Orleans Mint was a key player during this period, only missing two years in the series. Currently, 1898-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1898-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin is available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. These coins are packaged individually in protective plastic flips, with multiples of 20 coins available in protective tubes. In 1898, the New Orleans Mint narrowly outpaced the San Francisco Mint in production volume, striking 4,440,000 Morgan Dollars compared to 4,102,000 coins from San Francisco. Philadelphia had the highest output with a total of 5,884,000 coins.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1898-O Morgan Dollar Coins, you will see the classic effigy of Lady Liberty designed by George T. Morgan. This design presents Liberty in left-profile relief, wearing a Phrygian cap and a coronet crown, decorated with a laurel wreath. Surrounding her are 13 stars and the date mark. The inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1898.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1898-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin features the heraldic eagle. This design showcases the American bald eagle in a front-facing pose, with its wings extended, clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the O mint mark.
History
The New Orleans Mint played an essential role in the minting of Morgan Silver Dollars. This series was produced yearly from 1878 until 1904, and after a 17-year gap, the Morgan Dollar returned in 1921 for a single year. The mint issued coins annually from 1879 to 1904, reopening in 1879 after the Civil War and closing in 1909, thus missing the inaugural 1878 release and the final 1921 issue.
