Obverse

The obverse of these Silver Morgan Dollar Coins features Lady Liberty in portrait. This rendition from George T. Morgan presents Ms. Liberty in left-profile relief as she wears a Phrygian cap and crown of wheat. The obverse also bears inscriptions reading E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1890.

Reverse

On the reverse of 1890 Silver Morgan Dollars a bald eagle motif is featured. Also designed by Morgan, this rendition captures the eagle looking left with widespread wings. Other reverse features include a pair of decorative laurels and inscriptions reading UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR.

History

Prior to the Morgan, the Seated Liberty was the standard Silver Dollar in the U.S. for more than three decades. But following the Coinage Act of 1873, the striking of Silver Dollars ceased nationwide. During the hiatus, assistant engraver George T. Morgan developed an obverse and reverse for a new Silver Dollar. When the Bland-Allison Act of 1878 was passed, the Treasury was required to purchase silver so that the Dollar coin could re-enter production. With the approval of mint director Henry Linderman, Morgans design was selected for the nations new Silver Dollar.
