Obverse
A bust of Lady Liberty appears on the obverse of the Morgan Silver Dollar. Wearing a Phrygian cap and crown of wheat, Liberty faces to the left in this iconic portrait from George T. Morgan. The obverse has inscriptions as well reading E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1889.
Reverse
A rendition of the American bald eagle features on the reverse of these Morgan Silver Dollar Coins. Also credited to Morgan, this motif shows the bird with open wings as it looks toward the left. The reverse includes inscriptions as well that read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR.
History
Comstock Lode was a major silver deposit located in Virginia City, Nevada. It was named after Henry Comstock, who was a partial owner of the land there. Following its discovery in 1859, the United States Mint began purchasing silver for the production of a new Dollar coin. While formally named the Liberty Head Dollar, today it is known as the Morgan Silver Dollar. The lode eventually dried up, and when silver from the Sherman Purchase Act ran out, production of the Morgan Dollar ceased in 1904.
