{{/presale}}The iconic Morgan Dollar Silver Coin is one of the most sought-after bullion coins on the collectors’ market. Struck at multiple mints between the years 1878 and 1904, it was a popular coin in the American West due to its substantial design and high silver content. It grew rarer over the decades as the wear of circulation took its toll and as many coins were melted down for their silver. Morgan dollars with the quality of an uncirculated coin are especially rare, and some of the rarest of all are coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1886, which have an estimated surviving supply of only 19,000. Provident Metals now offers the 1886 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin for online purchase.
Highlights:
The 1886 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin comes in a secure plastic slab with a label to verify its PCGS-certified grade of Mint State 63. That grade identifies an average strike with moderate marks or hairline scratches. Each shipment is fully insured by Provident Metals against even the most remote chance of loss or damage en route.
Obverse
The obverse field features Lady Liberty in a profile effigy, wearing a Phrygian “slave cap” that symbolizes freedom. This is accompanied by the lettering “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1886,” with thirteen decorative stars at the rim representing each of the Union’s founding states.
Reverse
The reverse field shows a heraldic eagle clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, along with the lettering “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
History
The Morgan Dollar Silver Coin was the result of a long legislative struggle over the status of silver coinage, which eventually resulted in laws requiring the Treasury to purchase and strike into coinage specific amounts of silver every year. In response to those laws, the U.S. Mint was compelled to urgently put a new silver dollar into production in the late 1870s, and the design came from then-Assistant Engraver George T. Mason. The coins that would bear his name went on to become important symbols of Americana and highly prized by collectors and investors.
