Introduced in 1878, the Morgan Dollar was minted for over 25 years, and during its peak in the 1880s, the Philadelphia Mint alone struck more than 152 million coins. The Morgan Dollar is a stunning coin with a rich history, and it is sure to continue to be a popular collectible for years to come. Now, Provident Metals offers certified 1886 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins for purchase online.
Highlights:
Production of Morgan Dollars increased dramatically over the course of the decade. The Philadelphia Mint struck more than 10 million coins each year, with the exception of 1881 when it struck 9.1 million coins. The highest levels of production occurred in the latter half of the decade, with an average of 19.5 million coins annually from 1886 to 1889.
Obverse
The obverse of the Morgan Dollar Silver Coin is a beautiful and iconic design. The coin features a left-profile bust of Liberty, which was created in 1878 by George T. Morgan. Liberty’s figure is shown in left-profile relief, and she is wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown. Inscriptions read E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1886.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1886 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin is a striking design that features the heraldic eagle. The eagle is shown in front-facing relief, and it is clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. This version of the eagle lacks the US national shield. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
