Obverse
On the obverse of this Morgan Silver Dollar Coin, Lady Liberty is featured. Here, youll see Ms. Liberty in left-profile relief. Adorning her head is a crown of wheat, Phrygian cap, and a band inscribed with LIBERTY. Additional inscriptions on the obverse field read E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1886.
Reverse
The reverse of 1886 Morgan Silver Dollars features a bald eagle motif. As you admire this sophisticated design from Mr. Morgan, youll notice that the bird carries both arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Traditionally, this imagery signified the wars America has fought and the peace she strives for. Reverse inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR.
History
In 1876, George T. Morgan was employed as an assistant engraver at the United States Mint. He worked under Chief Engraver William Barber, whose designs included the Trade Dollar and the Double Dime. After the Bland-Allison Act was passed in 1878, the Treasury was required to buy specified amounts of silver for the production of a new Dollar coin. Morgans obverse and reverse designs were selected before production on the new Dollar commenced in March 1878.
