Obverse

On the obverse of the Morgan Silver Dollar Coin, there is an effigy of Lady Liberty. For this portrait, designer George T. Morgan requested the help of Anna Williams, a school teacher from Philadelphia. Ms. Williams sat for five sessions until Morgan achieved his ideal portrait. The obverse also contains the date of 1885 along with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, which means out of many, one.

Reverse

The reverse of 1885 Morgan Silver Dollars contains a bald eagle rendition. In designing this motif, Morgan studied real-life bald eagles in order to capture their likeness. The result is a more realistic and grounded rendering of Americas national bird. Additional reverse details include decorative laurels and inscriptions reading UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR.

History

The Morgan Silver Dollar was struck at five different branches of the U.S. Mint between 1878-1921. The first three branches to strike the coin were Philadelphia, Carson City, and San Francisco. The New Orleans Mint then re-opened in 1879 the facilitate production needs. The final branch to mint the coin was Denver, which struck it for one year in 1921 before the Morgan design was replaced by the Peace Dollar.
