{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The 1884 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coins give collectors an interesting glimpse into mint production differences across three U.S. facilities. That year, the San Francisco Mint struck about 916,000 pieces, far more than the Carson City Mints smaller batch of just over 81,000. Provident Metals now has 1884-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins available from the San Francisco issue.
Highlights:
Each 1884-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin has been graded MS62 and comes sealed in a plastic holder. These coins tend to show mild wear in the form of duller luster, small groupings of contact marks, and potentially a few heavier abrasions. Some light hairlines may also be visible.
Obverse
The obverse of this coin features a design created by James B. Longacre. It shows Lady Liberty in left-facing profile, wearing a coronet crown. Her hair flows in curled strands, and a ring of 13 starsone for each of the original coloniesencircles the portrait. The inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1884.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1884-S Double Eagle shows the national Great Seal. It features a bald eagle with arrows in one claw and an olive branch in the other, along with a shield across its chest. Type III design features include an updated denomination layout and the addition of the national motto. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, TWENTY DOLLARS, and the S mint mark.
History
The year 1884 marked a relatively stable economic period for the U.S., and the coins mintage numbers help show how each mint contributed based on its region’s needs. San Francisco handled larger gold reserves, resulting in higher production levels there.
